I created the first biathlon, Biermeisters based on your suggestion. I'm not going to do the tetrology suggestion. If I do Meta sites, I would do Meta-only combinations probably. I had thought about Ubuntu, Ask Different, Unix & Linux before and I may do that (omitting Super User). I'll look at your other suggestions as I have time. @Pureferret: Sorry I haven't replied before now. I'm not going to be able to do visitor-chosen combinations, but I did implement your suggestion for Gaming Geeks and I'm open to other suggestions.
I have implemented Math Masters (19 users) and Science Masters (1 user). Unfortunately, Quant and Econ resulted in zero users with at least 1000 points on each. Thanks very much for the suggestions.
@BrockAdams: I had done as you suggested and used Wireshark. There was no backoff message (which my code handles) and there was no HTTP response code (after receiving a bunch of 200s during each run) to handle. I think it's the silent failure that is SE's response when it believes you're being abusive. It hadn't found my pace to be abusive for the previous 16 months so I believe there has been an unannounced change on SE's part. I'll add silent-failure detection so that it waits and tries again. No MCVE will be forthcoming, I'm afraid, since I don't have time to do the "M" part. Sorry. ...
