I started developing software on a small Casio basic calculator in 1987. I graduated to C, then C++ and finally Java. Although I work daily with Java I have a wide base of experience in a lot of other languages and technologies as well. Reading my blog will give you a good idea of some of the more recent trails I've explored.

I have created a few Stack Exchange related projects:

You can find some of my work other places as well:

comment Swatch: A Firefox plugin for monitoring Stack Exchange sites for interesting changes
I haven't had time to do much to it lately but I'll eventually get back around to it. I have lost some interest in the API due to what seems to be very little user interest in the tools created with it. I use the plugin though so I know I want to fix some of the missing parts soon so I can track a couple new sites.

@Magnus Sorry about that. Nobody seemed to want to use it so I didn't update it. I'm going to shut the hosted version down. The code is on github if you want to run it yourself.

comment Using the API for data analysis?
@Shane 10k is for each IP/key combination so if you are using the API directly from each phone you won't have an issue.

comment Java wrapper for Stack Exchange
@jjnguy I plan on it but I started working on other parts of it before v0.9 and I've just been too lazy to stash the changes and update it. There is just one place you have to make the change.

@systempuntoout Go to Tools->Add-ons then select the extension then the "Preferences" button on the extension.

comment Are apps created from the CC data dump ok to add?
@Kevin I think that depends on what you mean by arbitrary. There are a number of clauses in there that make it clear they want you to show the results as they are returned in their entirety. The results may contain tracking URLs that will mask the actual true URL and some results may be advertisements.

@Kevin Montrose There are a number of reasons. First off I don't believe there is a "legal" way to access Google search outside of a webapp. Second Google will never have domain knowledge of the Stack Exchange sites. You can't ask Google to limit the search to accepted answers. Try this sess.ioncannon.net and then see how much of that Google can do.

@George Stocker The plugin polls so I could see that happening. Depending on how many profiles the person configures, how many mentions they have and how quickly they tell it to poll. A 15 second poll would work out to 10.5KB each poll and that is still pretty big, all my info polls in about 2KB.

@George Edison I couldn't repeat getting stuck but I did see the error. I changed things a little and got the error in question to go away. I also added some more error handling so hopefully between those two things it fixes the issue.

@George Edison Is that causing something to break for you? That looks like it is part of the theme javascript.

comment Can we have some sort of notification system?
This is what pubsubhubbub is for. I imagine the answer will be no because of complexity. I would rather just have a firehose with every change in it.

@Pulse Can you tell me the version of firefox you are using? This could be a tough one to track down. It may also help if we move the conversation over to the support group that I set up here groups.google.com/group/swatch-support

@Pulse I think I need to know exactly what you are entering as your name. My guess is that something isn't being encoded correctly and I need to fix that. Can you give me an example of what user name you are entering that gives you that error? Can you try searching for something like "Jon" and tell me if that breaks as well?

@Pulse are you getting that when you try to find your id on stack overflow or one of the other sites? Can you tell me exactly what you typed into the search field?

@systempuntoout I'll add an optional ding if I can. @espo I'll make it an option.

comment Keep getting HTTP 406
I think an https endpoint would be a good compromise since it would bypass any firewall in between. If nothing else it would be nice to have at least one call exposed via https so this type of thing could be verified.
