Stack Apps is a question and answer site for apps, scripts, and development with the Stack Exchange API. It's 100% free, no registration required.

How it works

  1. Press : to start replying to a previous message.
  2. Press as many times as you need to mark the desired message.

What does it do?

First of all, the Chat Reply Helper for Stack Exchange sites provides a simple key combination to select a message to reply to.

This removes the need to grab the mouse and aim for the tiny reply icon. It also has the small side effect that it allows you to reply to your own messages, to possibly reference an earlier post.

Second, it puts a highlight on the message you're currently replying to.

Third, it displays the contents of the message that was replied to in a small bubble. This bubble is shown when hovering over the indicator that a message was a reply to an earlier message.

Developed on Chrome, should work in Greasemonkey as well.

Where do I get it?

It only seems to work on chat.SE, could you include chat.MSO and chat.SO? –  3ventic Dec 30 '13 at 6:59
@3ventic It should work fine on chat.SO. I'll add chat.MSO and push out a new release soon. –  Oliver Salzburg Dec 30 '13 at 12:11
@3ventic Turns out the target sites weren't replaced by the build script in the userscript. This should be fixed now. I've also put up the compiled version of the userscript onto GitHub now (dist folder). The extensions were not affected. –  Oliver Salzburg Dec 30 '13 at 15:16
