George the Dev originally began as a small experiment named "FlackBot". Due to increased difficulty maintaining the experiment and a few "incidents" in the chat rooms, FlackBot was abandoned for a couple of years. I recently rewrote the "brains" of the bot and gave it a new name. It is now back up and running.

George in action!

George the Dev is a chat bot for the Stack Exchange network of chat sites.

He currently hangs out in the Sandbox and the Ask Ubuntu General Room. He is capable of understanding a few commands and those commands resemble a natural form of English. Here are some examples:

Me: @GeorgetheDev what time is it?
George: @Nathan The current time is Thu, 03 Sep 2015 05:22:02 GMT.
Me: @GeorgetheDev what is tritium?
George: @Nathan [link to "Tritium" article on Wikipedia]
Me: @GeorgetheDev what is (12 + 2) * 3?
George: @Nathan 42

He can also lookup manpages, perform ping and dig lookups, remember and recall your favorite things, plus a few other surprises.

George is released under the MIT License.

The source code for George is available here on GitHub.

I can be contacted at

George is written in JavaScript and is run with PhantomJS. Please see the README for further instructions.

+1 This is really cool George... I wish the source were open :) – Fosco Jun 8 '11 at 18:44
@Fosco: Well... me too. I will do my best to make this happen - currently some proprietary API keys are what's holding up the project from going open source. – Nathan Osman Jun 8 '11 at 18:47
