The inspiration for this project arose from my observations and personal challenges with the Stack Overflow moderation system, particularly when my "Not An Answer" flags for link-only answers were declined, revealing an ambiguity in the application of Stack Overflow's guidelines. This experience sparked a curiosity about the broader community's encounters with similar issues, as reflected in discussions and questions on Meta Stack Overflow. It led to the desire to systematically explore these concerns, motivating the creation of a project that leverages the Stack Exchange API to automate the analysis of "link only" content discussions and guidelines interpretations.

The project is designed to automate the retrieval and processing of "link only" questions from Meta Stack Overflow and download the referenced answer from Stack Overflow by interacting with the Stack Exchange API. It incorporates functionalities initially spread across three separate scripts into a single, structured Python script. This overview reflects how the project components align with the functionalities of the initially described scripts.

Overview of the Project (
meta_so_parser.py
)

Class Structure: The project is organized within a class,
MetaSOParser
, which organizes the functionalities related to fetching, parsing, and downloading "link only" content.

Configuration and Logging:

Logging is set up to track operations related to "link only" content.

API configuration is loaded from an
ini
file, mirroring the initial setup and loading process described.

Fetching and Downloading Content:

The
meta_so_link_only
method matches the functionalities of
metaso_linkonly.py
, fetching questions with "link only" phrases from Meta Stack Overflow, handling pagination, backoff from the API, and saving questions to a JSON file.

The
parse_questions_json
method extracts data from the
questions.json
file, similar to
parse_questions_json.py
. It writes question titles, URLs, question bodies, and answers to separate files, utilizing regular expressions to extract URLs.

The
download_flagged_link_only_answers
method performs operations akin to
download_flagged_linkonly_answers.py
, extracting answer IDs from URLs, fetching details from the Stack Exchange API, and saving answers to a JSON file.

Implementation Details:

Utilizes the Stack Exchange API for data fetching, with error handling and backoff strategies implemented.

Regular expressions are employed to extract URLs from question bodies, emphasizing the focus on "link only" content analysis.

Python's file handling and JSON manipulation capabilities are leveraged to store and process data.

Pagination handling ensures comprehensive data retrieval during the fetching process.

Execution Flow:

The script's main execution flow illustrates the sequence of operations: fetching "link only" questions from Meta Stack Overflow, parsing the downloaded JSON to extract and save relevant data, and downloading details of answers flagged as "link only".

This approach efficiently combines data retrieval, processing, and storage functionalities into a unified script, making the project easier to manage, execute, and scale. It focuses on "link only" content analysis on Stack Exchange platforms.

https://stackapps.com/q/105271SO Link-only Parser: Parse Stack Overflow for potentially link-only answersTrenton McKinneyhttps://stackapps.com/users/1242162024-03-13T01:49:45Z2024-03-15T06:02:25Z

The provided Python script is designed to identify potentially "link-only" answers on Stack Overflow for a specified time period and set of tags. It does this by leveraging the Stack Exchange API to fetch questions and their associated answers, applying certain criteria to determine if an answer is primarily composed of links. Here's a breakdown of its functionality:

Configuration and Constants: The script starts by importing necessary libraries and setting up constants such as the number of days in a month, body length limit for an answer to be considered link-only, page size for API requests, and log level. It also specifies tags to filter the questions by and the date range for the search.

Logging Setup: It configures logging to record the process, including found link-only answers, to a log file named according to the specified start and end dates.

Date Range Processing: A generator function
month_range
is defined to iterate over each month within the specified date range, facilitating the handling of the Stack Exchange API's time window limitations.

Configuration File Loading: The script loads an external configuration file that contains the API key needed to authenticate requests to the Stack Exchange API.

API Requests: Using a loop, the script sends requests to the Stack Exchange API to retrieve questions within the specified date range, filtered by the provided tags. For each month in the range, it processes questions page by page until all questions have been fetched.

Link-only Answer Identification: For each question, it checks if there are answers and then filters these answers based on criteria for being considered potentially link-only. This includes the presence of "http" in the body (excluding links from
https://i.stack.imgur.com
), absence of

tags, and a body length below a certain limit. Each identified link-only answer's URL is constructed and logged, and the link is added to a list for further processing.

Error Handling and Rate Limiting: The script includes error handling for request failures and respects the API's rate limiting by sleeping for the amount of time specified in the
backoff
field of the API response, if present.

Output: Finally, the script prints the number of identified link-only answers. Although there's commented-out code that suggests an intention to open these links in a web browser, this functionality is not enabled in the provided version of the script.

This tool aims to assist in moderating content by identifying answers that might not meet the community's standards for quality and completeness, specifically targeting answers that may rely too heavily on links without providing sufficient context or explanation.

https://stackapps.com/q/105174Fix for the network search paginationVLAZhttps://stackapps.com/users/621992024-02-25T20:47:48Z2024-03-12T12:14:21Z

Description

Problem

See the report Pagination on stackexchange.com search is broken

The pagination in the global search is broken. It only shows 15 results even when the page size is set to something different. Moreover, it loses the page size. Yet, the page count at the bottom seems to use a different page size than 15, so with many results, you would not see the last page(s) unless you navigate to them manually.

Fix

The page size should be hard set in the query parameters in the URL. That forces the pagination to work correctly.

Thus:

If there is no page size in the URL, you are redirected to the same page but with the page size set. This will be set to 15 as that is what the default is. This works on going to the stackexchange.com/search page or visiting any search query.

The page navigation buttons will also now "remember" the correct page size (rather than losing it).

https://stackapps.com/q/1050713AI generated content should NOT be allowed on Stack Appsrenehttps://stackapps.com/users/187222024-02-08T21:00:21Z2024-02-14T14:39:00Z

On February 14th, 2024 a new network-wide policy on AI-generated content goes into effect.

The de-facto default is that AI-generated content should follow the citation rules that already exist. In the announcement of this policy it is stated:

Sites that have — before February 14th — made the Community Management Team aware of their superseding site policy on the matter that disallows this content instead of requiring it to be cited will have a different template that instead reflects that policy.

Since Stack Apps is its own meta site, this question is a poll (upvote = I agree, downvote = I disagree - hence the feature-request tag).

Do not allow AI generated content on Stack Apps

Additional considerations can be discussed in comments / answers.

https://stackapps.com/q/1049962023: a year in moderationJNathttps://stackapps.com/users/327342024-01-24T16:43:55Z2024-01-24T18:59:23Z

It’s that time of the year again! As we wave goodbye to last year and welcome the new one, we have a tradition of sharing moderation stats for the preceding calendar year.

As most of you here might be aware, sites on the Stack Exchange network are moderated somewhat differently to other sites on the web:

We designed the Stack Exchange network engine to be mostly self-regulating, in that we amortize the overall moderation cost of the system across thousands of teeny-tiny slices of effort contributed by regular, everyday users.
-- A Theory of Moderation

That doesn't eliminate the need for having moderators altogether, but it does mean that the bulk of moderation work is carried out by regular folks — folks like you. Every bit of time and effort y'all contribute to the site gives you access to more privileges you can use to help in this effort, all of which produce a cumulative effect that makes a big difference in ensuring Stack Exchange sites remain a valuable source of high-quality content on the web.

So as we say goodbye to 2023 (and January 2024… ahem) and move into 2024, let us look back at what we accomplished as a community... by looking at some exciting stats.
¹ This refers to the automated systems otherwise known as user #-1.

² This refers to the membership of Stack Apps without diamonds next to their names.

³ The system will suspend users under three circumstances: when a user is recreated after being previously suspended, when a user is recreated after being destroyed for spam or abuse, and when a network-wide suspension is in effect on an account.

⁴ A "destroyed" user is deleted along with all that they had posted: questions, answers, comments. Generally used as an expedient way of getting rid of spam.

⁵ This counts every review that was submitted (not skipped) - so the 2 suggested edits reviews needed to approve an edit would count as 2, the goal being to indicate the frequency of moderation actions. This also applies to flags, etc.

⁶ Includes close flags (but not close or reopen votes). The community² can handle these flags by at least one person voting to close a question that has a close flag.

⁷ This ignores numerous deletions that happen automatically in response to some other action.

⁸ This includes comments deleted by their own authors (which also account for some number of handled comment flags).

For years, I've run a local PHP app using GuzzleHttp\Client to download my StackExchange posts.

Today, I'm suddenly getting this problem when posting my client_id, client_secret, code, redirect_uri.

{
"error_message": "Couldn't parse `client_id`"
}

I've tried posting from https://reqbin.com/post-online too and get the same error.

Where can I find more about this error message and why I might be experiencing this suddenly?

Update:

At https://stackapps.com/apps/oauth/view/13067 I see that my OAuth Domain and Application Website are way outdated, but I doubt it's a problem, both because I don't think those values get used anywhere and also because the values I see here are so old that my app ought to have broken much earlier if these mattered.

I wonder if this relates to my problem. I get the
Just a moment...
response:

I'm interested in downloading a backup of all my questions and answers on all Stack Exchange sites in the form of markdown files. I'm already aware of this SE data explorer query, but this downloads all of my questions and answers into a CSV file. I'm also aware of this question that was asked over 10 years ago, but I did not see any recent answers. Does there exist an app that does this? Or would I need to make one?

https://stackapps.com/q/104932Easily apply "bookend" deletion of AI-generated contentblackgreenhttps://stackapps.com/users/859982024-01-11T14:14:46Z2024-01-11T14:14:46Z

Description

This is a fork of Samuel Liew's DeletedUsersHelper userscript. It's a script for moderators only.

The purpose of this userscript is to simplify bulk-deletion of AI-generated posts as per the bookend policy.

How it works

The script adds a button at the top of the user's Answers tab:

By clicking the button, a checkbox is appended to each entry in the answers list, as well as a Delete button.

The moderator can tick any number of checkboxes and then click "Delete selected". This will prompt for a final confirmation indicating the total number of answers that will be deleted, then it will automatically cast delete votes on each of the selected posts.

Known limitations

The script doesn't currently allow to bulk-undelete.

The script doesn't check if a post is locked.

Installation

Click to install

source

Bugs, requests

You can post bugs or requests in the script repo.

https://stackapps.com/q/104225Toasty: A better chat antifreeze botGingerhttps://stackapps.com/users/910912023-09-24T18:09:46Z2024-02-09T10:01:39Z

About

Toasty is an antifreeze bot for the Stack Exchange chat system. It automatically sends messages in low-activity rooms to keep the system from freezing them for inactivity. Toasty is usable by any user with at least 200 network-wide reputation through its intuitive web interface.

Caveats:

Toasty currently only supports https://chat.stackexchange.com, not https://chat.meta.stackexchange.com or https://chat.stackoverflow.com. Support for the other two sites is planned to be added soon.

Toasty cannot antifreeze rooms that its bot user cannot access; this realistically means that the following cannot be antifrozen:

Private rooms

Rooms that are already frozen

Gallery rooms that Toasty is not allowed to access

For Gallery rooms, Toasty's bot user must be allowed to send messages. If Toasty is unable to antifreeze a room, an error will be logged under the Runs tab on the room info page.

<s>Due to an oversight with how rooms are stored, owners of a room that is being antifreezed by Toasty will not see the room in their room list unless they added it themself. (They will still be able to access and edit the room by going to its page directly.) This is planned to be fixed soon.</s>
This issue is now fixed. However, newly added ROs will need to wait for up to 24 hours for the bot to update its stored room list.

Moderators may not be automatically granted the mod role upon creating an account due to an issue with how modship is checked. This is planned to be fixed soon. If you are a moderator and have not been automatically granted the mod role, ping Ginger in the Toasty chatroom. This may also cause users with 200+ reputation on only a few sites to be erroneously denied from creating an account, although this has not happened yet.

The antifreeze jobs run daily, at a randomly selected time within a 3-hour window centered on UTC midnight.

https://stackapps.com/q/101805Calling SE APIs with Nushell (basic overview)NotTheDr01dshttps://stackapps.com/users/834842023-07-25T23:32:54Z2024-02-28T07:04:25Z

While I still prefer a more "traditional" shell for day-to-day use, I'm finding Nushell's structured data capabilities to be a fantastic companion to the SE API (among others). It's been months since I've used
jq
for processing JSON REST results.

Starting with a simple example:

# Get the last 100 questions posted on Stack Overflow

https://stackapps.com/q/97230Error calling Stack Overflow Teams API using Python requests libraryShadaehttps://stackapps.com/users/1059222023-05-07T04:15:21Z2024-02-01T07:09:26Z

I'm trying to call a PUT/DELETE request using the Stack Overflow Teams API in Python, but I'm encountering errors. As an FYI, I have a working PAT that allows me to make get requests for articles and questions. Specifically, I'm trying to create an article, update an article, and delete an article using the API, but the PUT/DELETE requests don't seem to be working. When I try to run the code, I get an error message that says "no method found with this name" or {"error_id":400,"error_message":"title","error_name":"bad_parameter"}. The title might be the issue, but I don't think it goes against the requirements (string, 5 character+ length)

I have tried running the API calls using Python's requests module, and I have checked that my authentication token is correct. I have also tried adjusting the order of the payload and double-checking that the headers are correct. However, I'm still getting errors.

Here's my code (sanitized for privacy):

As per Aaron's answer, the change is temporarily reverted due to the backlash, so the userscript is not necessary for now. To compensate for the loss in usefulness, I decided to add per-site user overrides (since 0.3.0) and allow it to work on the current 404 pages (since 0.4.0).

About

The userscript brings back custom 404 pages to the Stack Exchange network replacing the lifeless corporate warning icon with community-specific images while preserving the updated layout. Currently supported communities (some 404 pages were never indexed by archive.org, so if you know of the missing 404 images, please let me know):

v0.3.0 introduces per-site user overrides and a configuration modal accessed by clicking on a "404" button added to the main site menu:

The modal allows you to change the image source for each of the sites with custom 404 pages (ability to add sites to the list coming soon) - it will be loaded instead of the default image:

Since v0.8.0, there is a small icon next to each of the configuration labels - clicking on one takes you to the corresponding 404 page:

Since v1.1.1, there the configuration modal supports custom header text as well:

About

The new UI for reviews introduced in early 2021 requires two clicks to submit reviews for an item: once to select the action, and a second time to submit the review. By contrast, the previous UI simply required a single click on an action button to submit a review.

Some users prefer the old behavior of simply having one click to submit a review. This script removes the requirement for a second click on the Submit button, and makes it so that clicking on a review action will immediately submit the review, restoring the former behavior of the old queue layout.

Notes

To discourage robo-reviewing, there is a slight delay baked into the script: if you click on a review action too early, it will simply select the button without submitting the review.

About

StackScraper is a user script that adds HTML and JSON export options to each question. The JSON loosely resembles the API format and includes the HTML and markdown bodies of all posts, as well as their comments and vote counts (if you have permission to view them). The HTML displays the content similarly to Stack Exchange and includes the necessary attribution. Comments are included, but initially hidden.

https://stackapps.com/q/28916API InconsistenciesDave DeLonghttps://stackapps.com/users/4482012-01-04T23:26:50Z2024-01-25T10:06:35Z

In my opinion, one of the hallmarks of a good API is that it is self-consistent. It establishes easy-to-remember conventions and then follows them.

As I'm trying to adopt the 2.0 API, I'm finding a whole bunch of inconsistencies in the API that are making it really frustrating to work with. Here are some of the things that are really bothering me:

The value for the
sort
query parameter should always correspond to a field in the object of the returned JSON. It usually doesn't. For example, if I want to sort badges by their
badge_type
, I have to pass in
sort=type
. It should be
sort=badge_type
. (another example, for tags I do
sort=popular
even though it really should be
sort=count
)

I should not be able to sort by something that does not correspond to a field in the object returned. For example, I can sort Tags by "activity" (
sort=activity
), but there's nothing in the returned Tag objects that indicates what that activity is. If we really want to be able to sort Tags by the time they were last used, then Tags should have a
last_used_date
field that contains the timestamp of the last time the tag was added to a Question, and then I should do
sort=last_used_date
)

I find it really annoying that some object fields don't make sense in all contexts. For example, the Badge
user
field is only relevant if I'm requesting awarded badges (i.e. via
/badges/recipients
or
/badges/{ids}/recipients
). If the field is not always relevant, it should not be there. Instead, the
*/recipients
endpoints should return "Awarded Badge" objects that have
award_count
,
user
, and
badge
fields.

Tags, Badges, and Users all have
name
(or
display_name
) fields. So why can't I do
inname=foo
when requesting Badges? If you're going to offer searching by name on some things, you should offer searching by name on all things.

There are more, but these are ones that I remember right now. As I come across more I'll also post those.

https://stackapps.com/q/16727Application marketing ideasAdam Wrighthttps://stackapps.com/users/52010-10-06T20:01:15Z2024-01-26T12:35:02Z

As I prepare to ship v1.1 of Six to Eight, I'm curious as to what ideas other people might have for Stack Exchange app marketing. How do we reach Stack Exchange users without either annoying them with spammy messages or spending a fortune (or, indeed, anything beyond time).

Six to Eight has been about as successful as I'd hoped so far. I've shipped around 1000 copies: around 450 on the day it first hit the App Store and Jeff tweeted it, 150 when it came 3rd in the SE API competition, then a steady trickle at about 50 new downloads a week. I'm happy, but I think there're more users out there who might like it.

My only real ideas so far are posting on the meta sites, which I've rejected as being too spam like. I guess I could buy Stack Exchange ad space, but I've got no marketing budget for a free app. I like to encourage users to spread the word, especially to the audience on the new Stack Exchanges, but I don't know how.

How are other developers promoting their work, and what can I do to encourage more adoption?

About

There have been several requests on Meta Stack Overflow for a way to get a combined flair similar to what is shown on Area 51. I took a "I want it, I'll make it" approach. Thus became StackFlair.

StackFlair generates a combined flair representing all of your associated Stack Exchange accounts. StackFlair includes:

Your gravatar from your top site (by reputation points)

Your display name from your top site

Your total reputation points

The number of sites you are a moderator on

The total number of gold badges

The total number of silver badges

The total number of bronze badges

Favicons for your top six sites

Area 51 is currently excluded as the site is not included in the API.

The default output is HTML to support linking and titles for the elements contained in the flair. You can also get image output.

I provide a very simplistic UI for selecting a Stack Exchange site and inputting a user id. The generated content can also be linked to directly so that you can use the URL anywhere you can embed an image or pull dynamic HTML.

Several options are available: themes, excluding beta sites, using a single site or combined flair, HTML or image output. I am very open to more feature requests regarding customization options, theme, and layout.

Your StackFlair data is stored for 12 hours.

Website Usage

StackFlair homepage (Now dead): <strike>http://stackflair.com</strike>

Direct flair link (Now dead): <strike>http://stackflair.com/generate/{associationId}</strike>

When you visit the StackFlair homepage and enter in the details, you will be redirected to a direct flair link which you can use from then on.

Compatibility

StackFlair has been tested in Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 3.6, Chrome 7, and the mobile version of Safari (iPhone).

Issue Reporting and Tracking

Please report any bugs, feature requests, and issues at the StackFlair GitHub project.

I am happy to do even the smallest of requests, such as My blog colors are <x>, can you use that in a theme for me?

StackFlair is also listed on StackList

License and Code

StackFlair is an ASP.NET website written in C#. The Stacky library is used for API access.

The project is hosted at github.com/rchern/StackFlair.

https://stackapps.com/q/3592Retrieving a post with a specific IDDave DeLonghttps://stackapps.com/users/4482010-05-29T19:38:01Z2024-03-08T07:59:54Z

According to this question (and its answer), questions and answers are using the same index to determine their ID. In other words:

Question with ID #1

Answer with ID #2

Answer with ID #3

Answer with ID #4

Question with ID #5

Because the 3 answers consumed 3 ids, it is impossible for a question to have ID #2, #3, or #4. This is the behavior as defined in the question linked to above.

However, this is not reflected in the API. In some cases, you must know the type of a post in order to request information about it. For example, if you want to request the comments of a particular post, you must use either
/questions/{id}/comments
or
/answers/{id}/comments
. It would be really wonderful if I could just use
/posts/{id}/comments
and not have to rely on knowing the post type in order to retrieve its comments.

Pretty please?
